2024’s Golden Rules: Big, Bulky, and Dimensionally Awkward Distribution Centre Design

Siecap has worked with a considerable number of clients in the non-standard distribution space, and we’ve seen a huge range of distribution centres that miss the mark on efficiency. Much of our initial work with these clients involves streamlining and reorganising these distribution centres along some key rules. So we have put these rules together below to hopefully enable you to avoid some of the pitfalls we have worked to correct.

Rule 1: For big and bulky items, it is particularly important to get close to the product profiles and physical properties. Unlike homogenous pallet hotels, how the product dimensionally performs is a key understanding you need to acquire as you go about designing the appropriate DC solution.

Rule 2: Don’t be afraid to ignore the maximum use of storage height dictum. High density block stacking of product remains an efficient solution. Spend time in designing your block stack, make your lane depth appropriate and be clear on setting effective utilisation targets for each block stack lane.

Rule 3: Do some research. If you cannot block stack and the product does not fit in standard pallet racking try something else. Thankfully the material storage business has lots of solutions ranging from high density pipe storage through to cantilever racking, some of which are also appropriate to be deployed outside.

Rule 4: It’s all about flow. Big and bulky needs lots of space to both receive stock and stage stock for delivery. These areas need to be set up so volume can readily move in and out whilst avoiding structural bottlenecks.

Rule 5: Every big and bulky facility has small items. Having set up the site to handle the main game, do ensure your solutions for the ‘smalls’ are as dense as you can make them. That way you keep as much space free for the big products as you need.

Above all, remember you always run out of big slots first!

Having successfully completed a number of projects focused on fit for purpose design, Siecap has been able to achieve tangible savings in headcount, efficiency, and/or capacity utilisation. Our five golden rules above are a simple place for you to start, but they won’t be able to carry you to the end goal. Siecap can. If you are still struggling to fully utilise your distribution centre after implementing our golden rules, contact Siecap at siecap.com.au/contact-us/ to begin the consultation process.
